- Throughout middle school I used my own laptop, so I was able to use Word and became accommodated with it. However, when moving to a private High School, we were provided with Chromebooks where we were required to use Google Docs instead. This made me get used to using Google Docs and lose my skills in Word. Now, I am trying to use both to be able to use either one in the future. I do enjoy taking notes, writing essays, and completing assignments on both platforms instead of writing on paper as you can search the pages for key words to refer back to your notes and you can organize things by class or subject.
- I find the standard of being a "citizen" most meaningful as it is new to me. I didn't even think about the fact that we should also be encouraging students to contribute and be apart of the digital world. We not only should use new technology to teach but also inspire the students to engage in new technology themselves. This is interesting as some students may not be as engaged in digital resources as others due to what they have access to at home. Therefore it is important as their teacher, to help them engage and become familiar with different digital resources to become more of a "digital native" like other classmates and students their age.
- To be a "digital native" is to be a native speaker of the digital language of computers, video games, and the internet. It means one is up to date in understanding terms used in the digital media. I agree with this label as it is valid that those who do not utilize technology like social media as often as others will not understand terms used on it, making them more of a "digital immigrant." I definitely see a difference in how most of my teachers use different technology resources and in different ways than us students. This is due to the fact that we grew up with technology for the most part so we are more accommodated with newer resources as teachers tend to prefer to stick to the older ones. For example, some of my teachers now and in the past still prefer us to turn assignments in on paper, despite there being several online resources for submitting assignments and grading them online such as Word , Turn it in, and Canvas. This can get frustrating as a student as we are trying to learn new technology and teachers are keeping us stuck in the past. With my students, I hope to stay up to date with the technology and digital terms they are using to keep the class engaging and relatable. I will try to learn from the students as well as the digital resources like blogs and social media to do so.
